The Russian army launched an attack on Ukraine. The fog of war is still thick, but it is known that a number of cities were attacked from the air and Russian ground forces infiltrated Ukrainian territory on several fronts. This is a dramatic and exceptional situation.

 

A humanitarian crisis is now unfolding in Ukraine affecting the 200,000 members of the Ukrainian Jewish community. The entire country faces chaos, scarcity and political violence, and members of Ukraine’s Jewish community are especially vulnerable. Serious security threats—like the potential for looting or violence—now loom over Ukrainian Jewish institutions.

Support for the Jewish community is needed urgently. Immediate and short term needs already total $20 million and include:

 

  • Helping people make Aliyah to Israel
  • Securing the local community and its institutions
  • Maintaining critical welfare services
  • Assisting internally displaced people in multiple locations
  • Launching an emergency hotline
  • Securing temporary housing for people in transit
  • Purchasing satellite phones to maintain communications across the region
  • Securing five Jewish schools and training staff to manage crisis needs
